WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - New Zealand's prime minister warned Japanese whalers Monday they would face international condemnation if their crippled ship caused an environmental disaster on the Antarctic coast.
The Nisshin Maru has been stranded in Antarctic waters since a fire broke out on board Thursday, killing a 27-year-old crew member and damaging the ship's engines.
The crew has refused offers of assistance from a Greenpeace ship and a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker. The Japanese Fisheries Agency has said there is still hope of reviving the vessel.
