Official Scolds Bahamas PM on Smith Flap

Monday, February 19, 2007 10:01:58 PM
By MANUEL RIVERA

This photo shows the front page of the Monday, Feb. 12, 2007 edition of The Tribune newspaper, from The Bahamas, that published undated photos allegedly showing Anna Nicole Smith lying in bed with Bahamian Immigration Minister Shane Gibson. Gibson resigned Sunday night Feb. 18, 2007 in the wake of the publication of the photos. Both were fully clothed, but the pictures stoked a controversy because Gibson had fast-tracked Smith's application for permanent residency on the island chain. (AP Photo)NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) - The leader of the main opposition party in the Bahamas scolded the government Monday for not acting sooner to remove the country's immigration minister over his seemingly preferential treatment to Anna Nicole Smith.

Hubert Ingraham, leader of the opposition Free National Movement, said Prime Minister Perrie Christie should not have waited until Immigration Minister Shane Gibson offered his resignation on Sunday night to remove him from the Cabinet.

Gibson had been under fire since four days after Smith's death when a local newspaper published photos of him embracing her on a bed.
