ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - A Nigerian court ruled Tuesday that the vice president who has feuded with the country's leader can retain his position despite the ruling party's efforts to throw him out of office ahead of elections.
An appeals court in the capital, Abuja, sought to overturn a government decision to disqualify Vice President Atiku Abubakar from his role after he fell out with the president and joined an opposition party to contest presidential elections in April. Abubakar quickly filed suit.
Presiding judge Umaru Abdullahi said the government's December decision was "unconstitutional, illegal, null and void and of no effect whatsoever."
