BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - A land mine killed five Colombian soldiers Wednesday after a patrol chasing leftist rebels stumbled in to a mine field, authorities said.
A statement from the army said that the soldiers were conducting operations against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, in the rural zone of Buga, 150 miles southwest of Bogota. Two more soldiers were injured.
In 2005, the government's Land Mines Observatory said Colombia suffered more land mine injuries a year than any other country in the world.
