GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - His father was the alleged founder of El Salvador's death squads in the 1980s, but police said Wednesday they do not know if that charge played any role in the killings of Eduardo D'Abuisson and two other Salvadoran politicians.
The three officials and a driver were riddled with bullets and their charred bodies were found Monday along a road about 20 miles southeast of Guatemala City. Julio Cesar Santana, El Salvador's forensic expert, said it appears the men were burned alive.
Guatemalan President Oscar Berger said investigators were not ruling out the possibility of a political crime. Salvadoran President Tony Saca was more emphatic.
