CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) - The head of the National Assembly said Thursday the legislature plans to extend martial law in the troubled West African country if union leaders and the government do not reach agreement over the president's powers.
Guinea has been tense since mid-January, when union leaders called a nationwide strike that led to demands for longtime President Lansana Conte to step down. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces have killed more than 100 people.
Martial law is due to expire Friday.
