Wimbledon to Pay Men and Women Equally

Thursday, February 22, 2007 5:40:43 PM
By KRYSTYNA RUDZKI

France's Amelie Mauresmo raises her hand after she beat Daniela Hantuchova from Slovakia 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 during the quarter finals of Dubai Duty Free Women's Open in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Thursday Feb. 22, 2007. (AP Photo/Kamran Jebreili) WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Genteel and old-fashioned Wimbledon discarded one of its longest traditions — unequal pay. Six-time singles champion Billie Jean King, a pioneer for women's sports, said the decision was "a long time coming."

"With women and men paid on an equal scale, it demonstrates to the rest of the world that this is the right thing to do for the sport, the tournament and the world," she said.
