NEW YORK (AP) - Tim Howard is happy to have found a home with Everton, one that puts him in position to compete for the starting job on the U.S. national team as the 2010 World Cup approaches.
After a season in which he was mostly benched by Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson, Howard was loaned to Everton for the 2006-7 season. Last week, Everton and Manchester United worked an agreement for a permanent transfer for a fee of about $6 million, and Howard agreed to a 5 1/2-year contract through the 2011-12 season.
"I think Everton were happy to have me stay," he said Thursday during a telephone interview from England. "When they said they wanted to go forward if they could get a deal done on a transfer fee, I said, `Sure, go ahead.'"
