CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - South Africa's health minister, the target of international criticism for espousing garlic and lemons for AIDS patients, is in intensive care with a lung ailment and acute anemia, her doctor said Friday.
Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who has voiced doubts about the safety and effectiveness of AIDS drugs, was sick and unable to work for three months last year.
She was readmitted to Johannesburg General Hospital on Tuesday, six days after a rambling, confused performance at a press conference prompted calls for her to resign. Critics said a healthier person should be chosen to take on the challenges of a department struggling to cope with the estimated 5.4 million South Africans infected with HIV.
