WASHINGTON (AP) - Voice of America has announced plans to stop broadcasting in Uzbek and Cantonese and use the savings to increase programming to the Middle East, North Korea and Cuba.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcasts to Ukraine and Tibetan services from VOA and Radio Free Asia also are being reduced. RFE/RL broadcasts in Uzbek will continue.
"We regret having to make any cuts of any of these programs," said Larry Hart, spokesman for the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees VOA, RFE/RL and other U.S.-sponsored broadcasting. Hart pointed out that the VOA Uzbek services reaches only 0.1 percent of Uzbekistan's radio listeners.
