SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Lawyers for an Australian held at Guantanamo Bay went to court Monday in a bid to force his government to bring the 31-year-old alleged Taliban fighter home.
It was the first time that David Hicks has turned to the Australian legal system in his bid to end five years in custody at the U.S. naval base in Cuba.
A former kangaroo skinner, Hicks converted to Islam and is accused of fighting for the Taliban. He was captured in Afghanistan by the Northern Alliance during the U.S.-led invasion in December 2001.
