BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) - Malawi's vice president pleaded innocent Monday to charges of treason and conspiring to murder the president at the start of his trial in this southern African nation.
Vice President Cassim Chilumpha and co-defendant Yusuf Matumula are accused of plotting to overthrow President Bingu wa Mutharika by hiring men to assassinate him and key members of his government last year. Matumula, a local businessman, also pleaded innocent.
Chilumpha has been under house arrest since he was granted bail in May. He was arrested after the alleged assassins turned in recorded tapes of the plot.
