UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council generally supports deploying a U.N. force in Chad and Central African Republic to protect civilians who have fled fighting and monitor borders to reduce cross-border attacks, council diplomats said Tuesday.
But Chadian President Idriss Deby has expressed concerns about the deployment of a U.N. military force, and his agreement is essential before any troops can be sent to the impoverished central African nation, the diplomats said.
Chad and Central African Republic have faced attacks from rebels in their own countries as well as the spillover of the Darfur conflict in neighboring Sudan.
