Hundreds Protest Mugabe Visit to Namibia

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe addresses a crowd at his 83rd birthday celebrations in Gweru, south of Harare, Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007. (AP Photo/Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi)WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP) - Hundreds of people protested a visit Wednesday by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, holding signs reading, "Go home dictator." Police cordoned off the Zimbabwean Embassy, where demonstrators gathered. The local National Society for Human Rights called Mugabe's three-day state visit an insult to Namibia.

"President Mugabe is a dictator who is guilty of several human rights abuses and to a certain extent war crimes," said Phil Ya Nangoloh, the group's executive director. "He is an international pariah. He is not welcome in Namibia."

Mugabe, who arrived Tuesday, has faced international condemnation for his autocratic rule and poor human rights record. Last week, the EU renewed targeted sanctions including a travel ban and asset freezes on Mugabe and more than 100 of his top associates.
