Blizzards, Wet Snow Hit Midwest, Plains

Thursday, March 01, 2007 11:55:11 PM
By MIKE WILSON

Traffic crawls in blizzard conditions along Interstate 680 in Omaha, Neb., Thursday, March 1, 2007. Eastern Nebraskans awoke to swirling winds and heavy, wet snow Thursday morning with the promise of more on Friday. The wind-driven deluge closed schools, forced the cancellation of several events and made a mess out of the morning commute. (AP Photo/Nati Harnik)DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Heavy, wet snow and blizzard conditions hit the Plains and Midwest on Thursday, shutting down hundreds of miles of interstate highways as snowplows were pulled off roads in white-out conditions.

Schools closed in several states, and hundreds of flights were canceled. Two people were killed when their car overturned on a slick road in North Dakota, and one person died after shoveling snow in Nebraska.

The storm moved into Iowa with rain and sleet but changed to snow around dawn.
