BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The family of a small-town mayor found dead from a gunshot said Friday they are arranging a third autopsy to try to prove he was killed, despite earlier rulings of suicide.
Gerald Washington's widow, Mary, said the family hired well-known independent forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht for the investigation.
The body of Washington, the first black person elected as mayor of predominantly white Westlake in southwestern Louisiana, was found Dec. 30 with a gunshot wound to the chest and the weapon nearby. No suicide note was found.
