BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Soldiers killed five suspected Muslim insurgents during a raid on a weapons training camp in the jungles of southern Thailand on Friday, army officials said.
Thailand's three southernmost provinces Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani make up the only Muslim-dominated area in predominantly Buddhist Thailand. Muslims complain they are treated like second-class citizens and mistreated by soldiers.
More than 2,000 people have died in the provinces bordering Malaysia since the insurgency erupted in 2004. The insurgents have not announced their goals, but they are believed to be fighting for a separate Islamic state.
