A young boy waits his turn to be tested for malaria, in Manhica, Mozambique, in this February 2000, file photo. The first affordable combination anti-malarial drug tailored for children will soon be available across Africa, potentially saving millions of lives, the nonprofit organization and the pharmaceuticals giant who worked to develop it said Thursday March 1, 2007. The new medication, known as ASAQ, combines two of the most effective drugs known to treat malaria, artesunate and amodiaquine. (AP Photo/ Karel Prinsloo)MAPUTO, Mozambique (AP) - Mozambican marines rescued more than 1,700 people, including 900 children, from flooding in central Mozambique, officials said.

The marines used eight boats to mount the rescue operation in the central town of Buzi in the province of Sofala on Friday, where at least 28,000 people have been affected by the floods, Buzi district administrator Sergio Moiane said in a Radio Mozambique interview.

Mozambique has been inundated by rain since January. The situation was worsened last week when the impoverished southern African nation was battered by Cyclone Favio, which left at least 12 people dead in the tourist resort of Vilanculos.
