SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A hearing opened Monday to determine whether there is enough evidence to try nine members of an alleged Islamic terror cell accused of stockpiling bomb-making materials to attack Australia's only nuclear reactor.
The men, arrested in a series of pre-dawn raids in late 2005, are accused of conspiracy to make explosives in preparation for a terrorist attack and of being members of a terrorist group.
Armed police stood guard at the Penrith Local Court and patrolled nearby streets, while lawyers, journalists and members of the public underwent rigorous security checks before being allowed into the building.
