SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A man took his 12-year-old daughter along when he went door-to-door fraudulently collecting money for a city athletic association, police said. Marcel Royal, 37, of Syracuse, was charged with second-degree scheme to defraud and second-degree criminal impersonation, both misdemeanors. He also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, said Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Tom Connellan.
Royal told people he was collecting for the Sherman Park Athletic Association. Instead, the money went into Royal's pocket, Connellan said.
Police are unsure how many people gave Royal money or how much money was involved, although the sum is believed to be small, Connellan said. Police know of at least three victims. If the number rises to 10 or more, felony charges could be leveled against Royal, he said.
