Tourists Freed by Rebels Leave Ethiopia

Thursday, March 15, 2007 8:03:43 AM
By TOM MALITI

Two British embassy vehicles carrying the five Europeans who were kidnapped arrive at the British embassy in Addis Ababa, Wednesday, March 14, 2007. Ethiopia accused neighboring Eritrea Wednesday of masterminding the kidnapping of five Europeans and eight Ethiopians, describing it as an act of terrorism and fueling tensions between the bitter rivals. (AP Photo)ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Five Europeans flew out of Ethiopia for Britain early Thursday after an armed rebel group held them for 13 days in one of the most inhospitable places on earth.

Eight Ethiopians who were kidnapped with the Europeans on March 1 are still missing, and fears for their safety are growing.

A British Embassy official confirmed the five — three Britons, a Frenchwoman and an Anglo-Italian — had left the country. A Western diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media said they were headed for Britain.
