Mugabe Lashes Out at Opposition Support

Thursday, March 15, 2007 4:58:00 PM
By ANGUS SHAW

Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai exits from prison gates in Harare, Friday, June 20, 2003, after being released on bail, spending two weeks in jail for treason. Tsvangirai, the most serious political threat to Zimbabwe's longtime president, pursued a strategy of low-profile civil disobedience until Sunday, March 11, 2007, when he appeared at a banned opposition meeting, saying afterwards he was beaten by police. Doctors suspect he suffered a skull fracture and internal bleeding. (AP Photo)HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - A defiant and angry President Robert Mugabe on Thursday lashed out at Western support for what he called violent opposition activists and told his growing number of critics to "go hang."

The U.S., colonial ruler Britain and other Western governments stepped up their criticism of Mugabe's hard-line rule after police cracked down Sunday on a prayer meeting organized by the opposition, arresting dozens and allegedly beating many severely.

In Mugabe's first public remarks since the main opposition leader said he was assaulted by police, state radio quoted the president as saying he took "great exception" to the support the West has given his opponents.
