CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Prime Minister John Howard conceded Wednesday that his country's commitment to the Iraq war is unpopular, but said he is willing to sacrifice his government over the issue in elections this year.
Howard's standing has been battered according to recent opinion polls, as the opposition Labor Party gains popularity with its promise to withdraw troops from Iraq.
Howard maintains that his center-right coalition government is determined to keep 1,400 Australian troops in and around Iraq regardless of that policy's popularity.
