BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - By dropping her bid for re-election, Gov. Kathleen Blanco has triggered discussions about how her replacement should lead the stumbling hurricane recovery.
The Democrat surprised the state by leaving the campaign Tuesday, seven months before the October primary, after criticism of her attempts to help the state recover from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Her exit is heartening some critics, who say it will be an improvement no matter who replaces Blanco.
"Whether it's Blanco's fault or not, people see the recovery as slow. Now, you're going to have a new face for the recovery, by the end of the year," said Wayne Parent, a political scientist at Louisiana State University. "I think this will shake up the recovery effort, certainly, because everybody will know we'll have a new governor, a new leader."
