CHICAGO (AP) - A former high-ranking city official was indicted Thursday as part of a federal investigation of fraudulent city hiring and promotions.
A federal grand jury indicted Alfred Sanchez, former streets and sanitation commissioner, on nine counts of mail fraud in a scheme prosecutors say lasted from 1994 to 2005.
According to the U.S. attorney's office, Sanchez, 59, engaged in a scheme to provide city jobs, promotions and other employment benefits as rewards for political campaign work for the Hispanic Democratic Organization, of which he was a key leader.
