NEW YORK (AP) - Cablevision Systems lost a suit filed by Hollywood studios who claimed that the cable company's next-generation digital video recording device would have broken copyright laws.
The ruling late Thursday in a federal court in New York quashed Cablevision's plans to "network" digital video recorders, which would have allowed digital cable customers to record and play back shows through their regular cable boxes without new DVR boxes equipped with hard drives.
Cablevision Sysems Corp. spokesman Jim Maiella said the company was disappointed with the ruling and was considering an appeal. The company had originally announced its plans to test the service last March but has been awaiting the outcome of the case.
