KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) - A senior judge from Pakistan's tiny Hindu minority was sworn in as acting chief justice Saturday amid a judicial crisis embroiling the government of President Gen. Pervez Musharraf.
Rana Bhagwandas replaced Javed Iqbal, another judge who was given the position temporarily after Musharraf removed the Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry on March 9 for alleged abuse of authority.
Lawyers have observed a nationwide strike and held rallies across the country since March 9, when Musharraf suspended Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, Pakistan's chief justice, over allegations that he had abused his authority.
