Panel Voting on Hong Kong's Next Leader

Saturday, March 24, 2007 10:44:51 PM
By WILLIAM FOREMAN

Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing waves to reporters as he arrives at a polling center to vote for the chief executive election in Hong Kong Sunday, March 25, 2007. Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang thrashes his rival Sunday in an election that pro-democracy figures have dismissed as a ridiculous sham. The winner will be picked by an 800-seat election committee loaded with tycoons, leaders of special interest groups and other elites. Since the panel usually chooses Beijing's favorite candidate, the veteran civil servant Tsang was almost certain to win. The incumbent, veteran civil servant Donald Tsang, was widely expected to trounce his rival, lawmaker Alan Leong, who denounced the process before casting his vote.

"This is of course a rigged small-circle election," Leong told reporters.
