W.Va. Auction Helps Student Farmers

Monday, March 26, 2007 3:12:17 AM
By TIM HUBER

Various cuts of pork sit ready to be sold Monday, March 12, 2007 during the 64th annual Future Farmers of America Ham, Bacon and Egg Show and Sale at the Capitol in Charleston, W.Va. Though an auction of meat and egg products raised by farm kids might seem like a stereotypical last gasp of a quaint, dying tradition, it's not. Old-timers recall similar contests in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, but say they've gone by the wayside, leaving West Virginia with is believed to be the last such event in the nation. (AP Photo/Jeff Gentner)CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia may not be among the nation's top farm states, but it's likely the only place where anyone would pay $10,000 for a dozen eggs.

Or, for that matter, nearly $12,000 for an old-style, dry-cured ham or $800 a pound for a meaty slab of well-marbled bacon. Such windfalls have become common at the West Virginia's Future Farmers of America's annual Ham, Bacon and Egg Show.

Successful bidders at the auction win a hearty meal or two in most cases or donate the winnings to charity. The student farmers receive recognition and money to apply for college.
