Shanghai Chief Is a Rising 'Princeling'

Tuesday, March 27, 2007 12:19:26 PM
By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN

Xi Jinping, Zhejiang Province Communist Party Secretary, is shown Tuesday Sept. 19, 2006 in Hangzhou, China. Shanghai's new boss was described by U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson as a "guy who really knows how to get over the goal line." Yet at home, Xi Jinping is chiefly regarded as a "princeling," the label assigned to the politically influential sons and daughters of leaders who are being positioned for higher office ahead of a key Communist Party congress this fall. (AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko)SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Shanghai's new boss is seen as a capable leader, a consummate networker, and in the words of U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, a "guy who really knows how to get over the goal line."

Yet above all else, Xi Jinping is regarded at home as a "princeling," the label assigned to the politically influential sons and daughters of leaders who struggled alongside Mao Zedong in the early years of the communist state.

Xi was named over the weekend to be Communist Party secretary in Shanghai, China's largest and richest city. His appointment follows a massive corruption scandal that led to the ouster of his predecessor, Chen Liangyu.
