DOVER, Del. (AP) - A lawmaker charged in a domestic dispute hours after using his position to avoid a drunken driving arrest last year resigned from the state House on Tuesday.
Republican John Atkins announced his resignation just before the House was to debate a censure resolution against him.
"I could have thrown the towel in earlier, but I thought this was a fight we could win," a tearful Atkins said as his wife, Heather, looked on. "It just didn't turn out that way."
