ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - A presidential candidate from a small party died Thursday, raising the possibility Nigeria may have to delay balloting that would see its first transfer of power between elected governments in four decades.
State-run Radio Nigeria announced the death of Adebayo Adefarati but offered no details. He was earlier reported to be hospitalized. Adefarati, a former state governor and candidate for the Alliance for Democracy, was not considered a leader among the 24 contenders.
Under electoral law, balloting can be postponed if a party's candidate dies after nominations close and the party requests a delay.
