Nigerian Campaign Targets the Basics

Friday, April 13, 2007 12:12:04 PM
By EDWARD HARRIS

Election workers carry election material as a Nigerian soldier looks in at the city of Lagos, Nigeria, Friday, April 13, 2007. Nigerians go to polls on Saturday to vote for representatives in state legislatures and governors of the country's 36 states, then elect a new president one week later. Candidates _ from the federal to the state and local levels _ all promise to curb graft and help Nigeria finally gain its immense potential as Africa's biggest oil producer. (AP Photo/Sunday Alamba) LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - A campaign jingle is a Nigerian voter's musical wish list: "give us life and security ... food, water and shelter."

While Nigeria is one of the world's top oil producers, official corruption has left its people among the poorest on the globe. With the presidential ballot looming, Nigerians are hoping a new leadership can finally provide the basics. Nigerians go to polls on Saturday to vote for state legislators and governors, then elect a new president one week later.

Nigeria's wounds are deep and judging by a campaign meant to set up the nation's first civilian-to-civilian power transfer, a new dawn may not be ready to burst forth after the April 21 election.
