MIAMI (AP) - A jury Friday convicted one of five men accused of abducting a young couple in a tourist-heavy section of Miami Beach, raping and killing the girlfriend and leaving the boyfriend for dead.
Victor Caraballo was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, armed sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, armed kidnapping and armed robbery. The jury, which deliberated for about 5 1/2 hours over two days, next will decide whether Caraballo, 39, should be executed.
Lawyers for both sides declined comment until after the sentencing phase, which begins Monday.
