Wen Calls 3-Day Japan Trip a 'Success'

Friday, April 13, 2007 8:34:51 PM
By HIROKO TABUCHI

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao wearing baseball uniform prepares to catch the ball during an event with students of private Ritsumeikan University's baseball team at a stadium in Kyoto, western Japan, on Friday April 13, 2007. After two days in Tokyo Wen, on a mission to "melt ice" between Japan and China, traveled to this ancient capital of Kyoto, where he attended a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, chatted with local farmers and enjoyed baseball with university students. (AP Photo/Issei Kato/POOL)KYOTO, Japan (AP) - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao termed his visit to Japan a success Friday, wrapping up a three-day tour that signaled a thaw in tensions between the two Asian powers but left key disputes unresolved.

During his visit — the first to Japan by a Chinese leader in almost seven years — Wen struck a conciliatory note on Japanese wartime atrocities, stressed the growing interdependence between Asia's largest economies, and wooed the public with a series of goodwill stunts.

"My visit has been a success," Wen told reporters in the ancient city of Kyoto. "I held friendly, frank, serious and productive talks with Prime Minister (Shinzo) Abe, and we reached a common understanding in a wide range of areas."
