U.S.: Sudan Supports Janjaweed

Monday, April 16, 2007 4:58:38 AM
By MOHAMED OSMAN

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte talks to reporters during a press conference ending a three day visit to Sudan, in Khartoum, Sudan, Monday, April 16, 2007. Sudan must improve the humanitarian situation in Darfur, stop harassing aid workers and let U.N. peacekeepers deploy if it wants to upgrade relations with the United States, Negroponte told reporters today. (AP Photo/Nasser Nasser) KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - The janjaweed militia, accused of widespread atrocities in Darfur, is actively supported by the Sudanese government, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said Monday.

His remark contradicts Sudanese government policy, which has always denied backing the janjaweed despite accusations that it does so from the United Nations and the African Union.

Speaking at the end of a three-day visit to Sudan, Negroponte told reporters that the government must clamp down on the janjaweed, a pro-government militia that International Criminal Court has blamed for numerous cases of killing, rape, arson and looting in the western Sudanese region that has been wracked by rebellion and counterinsurgency for the past four years.
