HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Rescue crews were working Tuesday to reach two coal miners believed buried beneath 75 feet of rock and dirt from a collapsed wall of an open pit in the western Maryland mountains, an emergency management official said.
Large amounts of debris were being moved in an effort to make contact with the trapped miners, Richard DeVore, Allegany County director of emergency services, said late Tuesday.
Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, said 50 loads of debris weighing 40 tons apiece had been removed from the mine. The wall that collapsed was still unstable, she said.
