Rescuers Search for Missing Yacht Crew

Friday, April 20, 2007 9:16:04 PM
By MERAIAH FOLEY

A police handout photo of a yacht found floating around 160km east of Townsville , Friday, April 20, 2007. A 12-meter-long (40-foot-long) catamaran found drifting off Australia's Great Barrier Reef had engines and electronics running, and food on the table, but no crew, officials said Friday after launching a massive search for the missing men. A coastal patrol aircraft spotted the vessel, named Kaz II, on Wednesday but rescue workers only reached the boat early Friday, confirming there was no one aboard. (AP Photo/Queensland Police, HO) SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Rescuers in helicopters and boats scanned the seas Saturday for the missing crew of a catamaran found deserted off the Great Barrier Reef — with the sails up, engine running and food on the table.

The three-member crew was last seen Sunday leaving the northeastern town of Airlie Beach. On Wednesday, a coastal patrol plane spotted their 40-foot catamaran drifting aimlessly, its headsail battered and torn, about 95 miles offshore. Rescue workers who reached the boat early Friday confirmed no one was aboard.

The Australian newspaper's Saturday edition quoted police as saying the crew probably fell overboard, but authorities refused to confirm that report when contacted by The Associated Press.
