MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A federal appeals court explained the reasons Friday it freed a state worker from prison in a case that has figured into a congressional investigation of fired U.S. attorneys.
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals said that Department of Administration purchasing official Georgia Thompson likely used political considerations to help Adelman Travel Group win a state contract but that wasn't a crime.
"The idea that it is a federal crime for any official in state or local government to take account of political considerations when deciding how to spend public money is preposterous," Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook wrote, joined by two other judges.
