47 Reported Dead in New Somalia Fighting

Sunday, April 22, 2007 3:24:16 PM
By SALAD DUHUL

Smoke hovers above the outskirts of Mogadishu, after a heavy fighting Saturday, April 21, 2007. At least 52 people were killed and 120 were wounded in heavy fighting Saturday in the Somali capital, a human rights group and hospital officials said Islamic insurgents, who are based in residential areas, battled Ethiopian troops on Mogadishu streets in the city's southern and northern districts. Many of the Islamic insurgents are masked men and they fire shoulder-held rocket launchers and Kalashnikov assault rifles. They also use pickups mounted with machine-guns. The government, warning of an upcoming offensive, called on residents living in insurgent strongholds to leave their homes.

Sudan Ali Ahmed, the chairman of the Elman Human Rights Organization, said six insurgents and 41 civilians died. Some of the civilians died of their injuries after being wounded during the previous day's heavy fighting, he said.
