AVALON, Calif. (AP) - A body that washed ashore Tuesday on Santa Catalina Island was identified as a missing Phoenix man whose sailboat smashed into a mainland jetty and broke up in strong winds last week, authorities said.
The body of William Eugene Ott, 61, was found Tuesday afternoon, said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.
Ott left Los Angeles harbor early last week and headed for the Channel Islands aboard his 27-foot vessel, authorities said. The experienced sailor couldn't be found when the sailboat struck the jagged shore near Newport Beach last Wednesday.
