NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - The first student court-martialed in the Coast Guard Academy's history has appealed his conviction on sex and extortion charges, claiming errors were made during last year's trial.
Webster M. Smith, of Houston, was released for good behavior after serving five months of the six-month prison sentence he received in last June's court-martial, the first of a cadet in the academy's 130 years.
Among the points in the appeal filed April 13 is a claim that a key witness, a female cadet, had previously falsely accused a Coast Guard enlisted man of sexual assault to avoid discipline.
