MOUNT VERNON, Va. (AP) - First lady Laura Bush spent a couple of hours socializing Thursday with her Japanese counterpart, Akie Abe, at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate.
The two walked through the formal Upper Garden, and Dean Norton, the director of horticulture for Mount Vernon, presented Mrs. Abe with a flower that Mrs. Bush identified as a Texas parrot tulip.
After lunch, they toured the estate's mansion and new museum, which debuted late last year. The women were joined by several of Mrs. Bush's friends, Mount Vernon staff members and Gay Gaines, regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, which runs the first president's home.
