NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A Yale University student who burned an American flag on a home's porch was sentenced Thursday to community service and probation, his attorney said. Charges against two other students were dismissed.
Hyder Akbar, 23, worked as an informal translator for U.S. forces during the invasion of Afghanistan and later published a memoir, "Come Back to Afghanistan." He and two other men were arrested this month after officers spotted the burning flag and tore it from a pole mounted to the house.
Akbar's attorney, William Dow, has called the incident a "foolish college prank."
