SPENCER, Mass. (AP) - Officials lifted a water ban Thursday in this small city and pressed residents to flush water lines and boil supplies after too much of an anti-corrosion chemical was added to the town supply, sickening dozens of people.
The ban ended after tests at 20 locations showed acceptable levels in the measure of alkaline and acidity in the water distribution system, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection said.
Officials have flushed the system to remove excessive levels of sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, said Town Manager Carter Terenzini. Nearly 100 people were treated at hospitals for burning sensations and skin rashes. Most were released by Wednesday night.
