RED OAK, Iowa (AP) - A farmer who was accused of killing a neighbor over a land feud and dumping his body in a cistern was convicted Monday at his second trial of manslaughter.
Rodney Heemstra, 48, was initially charged with first-degree murder, but a jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
Heemstra was accused of shooting Tom Lyon, 52, in January 2003. Heemstra claimed he fired the shot in self-defense when Lyon blocked his pickup on a gravel road before lunging at him.
