NEW YORK (AP) - The trial of a writer accused of posing as a city firefighter and sexually abusing a woman began Monday with the accuser testifying that she pretended to be unconscious.
The woman told jurors that Peter Braunstein told her she didn't need to worry about dying because if he had wanted to kill her she would already be dead. She said he told her she was "lucky," unlike some others he had encountered and killed.
Braunstein, 43, has pleaded not guilty to sexual abuse, arson, kidnapping, burglary, robbery and assault. The defense says he had an undiagnosed mental illness at the time of the attack and was therefore not criminally liable.
