NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The last time Queen Elizabeth II visited Jamestown, scientists believed the original fort at England's first permanent settlement in America had long ago eroded into the James River.
A lot has changed in 50 years.
The queen and her husband will visit the United States starting Thursday to help mark Jamestown's 400th anniversary, and one of the places they'll see is the site where the settlers built their fort in 1607. Archaeologists discovered the remains of the triangular fort still on land in the mid-1990s.
