JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A reputed Ku Klux Klansman was granted immunity to testify in the upcoming trial of his cousin, James Ford Seale, who is charged with kidnapping and conspiracy in the 1964 murders of two black teenagers.
Charles Marcus Edwards admitted in 1964 that he and Seale abducted and beat the two teens, but he denied having a part in their deaths, according to FBI documents from the time.
Federal prosecutor Paige Fitzgerald told the court Wednesday that the case had stalled over the years because the Klan's "reign of terror" prevented many witnesses from coming forward and that persuading Edwards to testify was key to reviving the case.
