Motorola Says Icahn Not Elected to Board

Monday, May 07, 2007 10:20:04 PM
By ASHLEY M. HEHER

In this Feb. 7, 2006 file photo, financier Carl Icahn attends a news conference in New York. For months, Carl Icahn has been waging a not-so-quiet campaign to snag a seat on Motorola Inc.'s board. Even after shareholders cast their ballots at Monday evening's shareholder meeting on May 7, 2007, it may be weeks before the billionaire financier finds out if his down-to-the-wire proxy battle full of letters, press releases and advertisements was enough to win support of investors. (AP Photo/Shiho Fukada, File) CHICAGO (AP) - Billionaire financier Carl Icahn was not elected to Motorola Inc.'s board of directors, according to preliminary results released Monday night by the cell phone maker. Final results from Monday evening's shareholder vote could takes weeks to tabulate, the company said in a statement.

Speaking at the cell phone maker's meeting in downtown Chicago, Icahn acknowledged a likely defeat in a fierce proxy fight, saying he didn't think he'd acquired enough support from shareholders to be elected to Motorola's board of directors.

"I think it'll be tough for me to win," Icahn said before the tally was released. "I congratulate them if they win. And I really hope they can produce what they say they will."
